International Women's Day

“A woman is the full circle, within her is the power to create, nurture, and transform.”

The International Women’s Day which is defined to celebrate, respect and appreciate every woman out in the world, first begin to be celebrated as National Women’s Day in the United States on February 28,1909, at the suggestion of activist Theresa Malkiel. It was during an International Socialist Women’s Conference at Copenhagen, Denmark in 1910 that demanded for a designated day for women everywhere to press for their demands and so the approval for the same was received from 17 countries. Following this agreement at the conference, the day was first celebrated internationally in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on March 19, 1911. But the day got its recognition by United States for the first time in 1975.

The gender biasness, preference of any one gender over another is still observable in and around the world in every single field. This biasness is most often perceived among men and women, men preference over women. Reflecting upon this biasness, the International Women’s Day got celebrated under the theme- ‘gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow’, aimed to recognize women who are working to build a more sustainable day. The theme got diverted from the UN’s given theme as ‘Break the Bias’, focusing and building a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination, to value, appreciate and celebrate the differences. The celebration of the day and the theme was noted with people symbolizing the theme by crossing one’s hand in an X shape in front of one’s chest, that denote excellence, pride and power. Women being the effective and wonderful leaders with passion, spirit and power, the climate’s current situations improvement cannot be done without their involvement and support. They are recognized as more vulnerable to climate-change impacts than men, as they constitute the majority which are dependent on natural resources that the climate threatens the most. So, without the cooperation of women, a sustainable future is beyond our reach. And the cooperation of women is possible when there is gender equality.
